Long-term lysimeter experiments with a loess soil in a dry region of Germany (annual rainfall 551 mm) show that 97% of the rainfall were evapotranspirated and only 11 mm per year were leached. It can therefore be assumed that water and also soluble nitrogen move through the rooting zone very slowly. In the period 1983-1993 the N-balance between applied N-fertilizer and N-uptake by crops was +24 kg/ha per year. The percolating water contained less than 50 mg/litre NO3 from 1983 to 1993.
