New possibilities in onion breeding: genetical basis of hybrid development in Hungary

After an introductory literature survey of recent trends in breeding, the Hungarian hybrid variety breeding programme based on cytoplasmic male sterility is described. It aims at preserving the good skin firmness, high solids content and long storage life of Hungarian varieties, and new breeding methods (e.g. introduction of marker genes, in vitro cloning, cryopreservation, and gene transfer) are seen as facilitating a rapid reaction to changing requirements.
