New synergists for pyrethroid insecticides against a pyrethroid-resistant German cockroach, Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae)

The toxicities of permethrin, fenvalerate and fenitrothion and the synergists piperonyl butoxide, DEF (S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate), K-2 (2-phenoxy-4H-1,3,2-benzodioxaphosphorin 2-oxide), SK-2 (3-methyl-4-nitrophenyl N,N-dimethylcarbamate), SK-26 (4-methylthiophenyl N,N-dimethylcarbamate) and SK-102 (2-dimethylamino-6-methyl-4-pyrimidinyl N,N-dimethylcarbamate) to susceptible (CSMA) and resistant (Nagasaki) strains of B. germanica were determined, as were the toxicities of permethrin and fenvalerate together with each of the 6 synergists. The synergistic effect of the SK compounds on the CSMA strain was not marked (<1.8-fold synergism), although that on the Nagasaki strain was (4.0- to 4.8-fold synergism). This suggested that some pyrethroid resistance mechanisms involved in the Nagasaki strain are probably inhibited by the action of SK compounds, although tests with metabolic inhibitors suggested that the resistance mechanism was not due to increased detoxication activity. Of 6 analogues of SK-26 studied, 4-methylthiophenyl N,N-dimethylthionocarbamate had the highest synergistic effect.
