Nitrogen requirements of corn (Zea mays L.) as affected by monocropping and intercropping with alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

In field trials in 1987-88 in Puyallup, Washington State, USA, silage maize Northrup King PX9903 was monocropped or intercropped with M. sativa Saranac, and given 0, 150, 200 or 250 kg N/ha. The intercropped M. sativa was harvested once prior to sowing the maize each spring. Rotation effects on and N fertilizer requirements for monocropped maize following these treatments and also following monocropped M. sativa were evaluated in 1989-90.
