445 swine thyroid glands were examined grossly and histopathologically. The major non-goitrous pathological conditions included atrophy(3) ultimobranchial cysts(2), follicular cyst(2), vascular changes(12), degenerative changes(4) and lymphocytic thyroiditis(2). In most cases, size and weight of the gland remained almost unchanged despite the presence of pathological changes. Thus the size of the gland may not be taken as sole criteria for judging the health status of thyroid gland.
