Abstract
In grazing trials in Santa Maria, Brazil in 1990-91, swards of 4 P. purpureum cultivars were grazed rotationally by heifers in three 7-d cycles with rest periods of 32 or 56 d. Analysis of forage 72 h after commencement of grazing showed that nutritive value was higher and more stable in leaves than in other plant parts. Nutritive value was similar in all cultivars but forage CP content and in vitro OM digestibility were highest in cv. Merckeron Pinda and cv. Mercker-86-Mexico.
