PACSR (Protozoa Axenic Cultivation Serum Replacement) is described as an alternative to diverse buffered saline solutions and culture media without serum which only support Entamoeba histolytica for a few hours. PACSR, combined with PEHP or TYI basal medium supported vigorous growth of E. histolytica in the absence of serum, for long periods of cultivation (16 months, 16 passages, each after 72 h), although yields were lower than those achieved in control cultures grown in the classic media.
