The PLANETOR software program, developed in the USA in 1991, is described. Models used to evaluate the environmental factors are outlined. Databases incorporated into PLANETOR are listed. The potential for using PLANETOR as a tool for managing Italian farms in an environmentally sound manner is explored. First experiences in the adaptation of PLANETOR for Italy are outlined.
