The article discusses the provisions on compliance in the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (The Bern Convention, 1979) and assesses attempts to advance observance of these provisions and achievements, especially in respect of protection of habitats. A short description of the question of compliance and general methods of control as well as a short review of the discussions which took place during UNCED is given.
