, : Paleo-residues and their ages in the Altay Mountain since the Pliocene. Arid Land Geography 19(2): 9-15

Moderately weathered profiles, established during the Pliocene-early Pleistocene under a sub-arid-subhumid climate, contained abundant clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite). The weathering products were primary residual red beds (with red pigments) produced by parent material weathering in situ, and secondary red beds formed from erosional deposits on the primary beds.
