Forage rape (Brassica napus) was sown at 10-d intervals from 1 Sep. to 1 Nov. Field-grown plants were sampled before (4 Dec.) and during (16 Jan.) winter to analyse the nitrogen and non-structural carbohydrate reserves. Winter survival and regrowth were also measured in the spring. Before winter, DM yields from the plots sown on 1, 11 and 21 Sep. were 8600, 5960 and 2600 kg/ha, respectively, while crops from later sowings were not ready to cut.
