Performance of sunflower and pigeonpea intercropping under rainfed conditions

In a field trial in kharif 1991 at Pune, Maharashtra, sunflowers and pigeonpeas were grown alone, or sunflowers at 15, 22.5, 30 or 45 cm intra-row spacings were intercropped with pigeonpeas. Seed yields of both crops were highest when grown alone. In the intercropping treatments sunflower yield was lowest and pigeonpea yield highest when sunflowers was sown at the widest spacing.
