Potential of onion seed production in a tropical environment

The possibility of producing onion seed using artificial vernalization and vernalization under natural conditions at high altitude in Kenya was studied. Cured bulbs of 3 local and 8 recently introduced cultivars were stored for 8 weeks in a refrigerated cold room (5 or 10 degrees C), in a well-ventilated storage room at high altitude (Njabini, 2530 m a.s.l., average temperature 13.4 degrees ) or at room temperature at a lower altitude (Kabete, 1820 m a.s.l., 21.9 degrees ).
