Abstract
A method is presented to predict the behaviour of expansive clays following environmental change. It was developed from laboratory swelling tests measuring lateral stress and volume changes under controlled suction. The tests were conducted under constant total vertical stress and zero lateral strain conditions. The maximum lateral stress developed was greater under unsaturated than saturated conditions. The experimental investigation was performed on undisturbed unsaturated clay soils from Spain and it predicted not only swelling but also shrinkage.
