A farming system is conventionally perceived as the socioeconomic unit within which farmers' decision making should be understood. However, this approach cannot be applied to the Caribbean family farm household. An analysis of the rationale behind decision making at farming system level requires a widening of this approach to cover all activities carried out by the family.
