Research on the relationship between cotton varieties with different sensitivity to boron-deficiency and calcium absorption

Large differences between cotton cultivars in sensitivity to boron deficiency were detected. Relative shoot weight of boron-deficient plants ranged from 26.6 to 102% of control plants, with a mean of 73.4%. Sensitive cultivars absorbed less calcium in boron deficient conditions, whereas tolerant cultivars took up more calcium. However, calcium concentration in leaves was not closely associated with the boron regime, and total uptake was principally related to plant growth.
