This review covers: the induction of cytokine synthesis by macrophages exposed to Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites; the induction of T cell-independent IFN- gamma synthesis (role in resistance to infection); the induction of chemokine synthesis during acute infection with T. gondii; the role of IL-12 in biasing T cell differentiation towards the Th1 phenotype during acute toxoplasmosis; IL-10 as a physiological regulator of cytokine synthesis by T. gondii-stimulated host cells; nitric oxide as an end product of the IFN- gamma -dependent pathway which controls lymphocyte expansion during acute infection with T. gondii.
