Root pruning of sweet cherries

Root pruning of sweet cherries

Fruitteelt nieuws 9(10): 12-13

Three-year-old trees of the sweet cherry cultivar Lapins on Damil rootstocks were root-pruned on 2 sides 40 cm from the stem and up to 30 cm in depth after harvest, or in the following year either in early spring or before fruit drop. Controls were not root-pruned. Average total shoot growth was reduced to 8 m by root-pruning in early spring, compared with 22 m for unpruned trees; pruning after harvest or before fruit drop reduced it to 12 and 15 m, respectively.
