Studies of P. cupira colonies in Vicosa, Brazil, showed that caste determination in this species follows the general patterns of Trigonini. The effects of juvenile hormone and the amount of food on the process were studied. The frequency of queens increased with the quantity of food ingested by the larvae and with the amount of juvenile hormone topically applied. Queens emerged earlier than workers.
