In India, 16 or the 18 major river basins cover two or more states. There are a number of cases in which basin states have collaborated in developing projects on interstate rivers. The importance of water sharing in India is considered with reference to two major irrigation systems in Tamil Nadu: the Cauvery Mettur Project (CMP) and the Periyar Vaigai Project (PVP). The CMP involves cooperation between Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry. The PVP involves Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
