Short-term preservation of milt from catla (Catla catla Hamilton) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix Valenciennes)

Short-term preservation of milt from catla (Catla catla Hamilton) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix Valenciennes)

Bangladesh Journal of Zoology 23(2): 139-146

Milt of catla and silver carp was diluted in Cortland's solution or Hanks balanced salt solution and stored in test tubes or Petri dishes for up to 6 days at 4 degrees C. Inclusion of 1000 IU penicillin and 10 mg streptomycin sulphate per ml raw milt increased the duration of preservation of sperm motility. Dilution rates of 1:3, 1:4 and 1:5 were tested; motility was maintained longest at 1:4 dilution. Storage in Petri dishes gave better results than storage in test tubes.
