Survival of Pyricularia oryzae in wheat seeds

The survival of Pyricularia oryzae in wheat seeds was studied under laboratory conditions. The seeds of two wheat cultivars were kept in paper bags and stored in the laboratory without any control of temperature and relative humidity. At monthly intervals after being disinfected the seeds were plated on culture medium. The viability was based on the fungus colonies development. After 22 months, the pathogen viability lost as recovering assays was negative. It was concluded that infected wheat seeds may be primary inoculum source for this causal agent taking into consideration that the seeds are stored by growers a period of 7 to 8 months.
