Survival of selected bacteria and fungi in hypertonic (7.2%) saline

A 7.2% NaCl solution was inoculated with either Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Actinomyces pyogenes, Candida albicans, or Aspergillus niger, in amounts higher than that usually seen with contamination of intravenous solutions. For each microorganism one bottle of 7.2% NaCl was incubated at 25 degrees C, and another at 5 degrees C.
