Survival of the Mauritius sugar industry - the role of R & D

Survival of the Mauritius sugar industry - the role of R & D

Proceedings of the First Annual Meeting of Agricultural Scientists, Reduit, Mauritius, 12-13 June 1995: 14-23

Modernization and centralization of the sugar industry in Mauritius has decreased the number of sugar factories to 17 while annual sugar output has risen to 630 kt. Problems facing the industry include a scarcity of labour, recent losses of cane lands, greater awareness of environmental issues, higher production costs, and lower sugar prices on the world and preferential markets.
