The predominance of small and medium sized enterprises in the food industry is a common feature for all member countries of the EU. Observations are made on the present activities and future potential of small and medium sized enterprises in the food industry. An outline of the advantages enjoyed by such enterprises as compared with larger ones is presented, along with the achievements of this type of industrial organization.
