Susceptibility of Tropea red onion to onion smudge caused by Colletotrichum dematium f.sp. circinans

Susceptibility of Tropea red onion to onion smudge caused by Colletotrichum dematium f.sp. circinans

Informatore Fitopatologico 47(4): 31-34

The resistance of coloured-skin onion cultivars to C. dematium f.sp. circinans is one of the classic examples of preinfectional resistance. Phenolic compounds in the skin impede the development of mycelia, causing the breaking of the germ tube of spores and death of the spore before the fungus has entered into contact with the host.
