Susceptibility testing of fungi: current status of correlation of in vitro data with clinical outcome

Susceptibility testing of fungi: current status of correlation of in vitro data with clinical outcome

Journal of Clinical Microbiology 34(3): 489-495

Susceptibility testing of fungi is reviewed, including strategies for correlating in vitro results with in vivo outcomes in experimental infections in animals, cutaneous and mucosal infections and invasive fungal infections. Results of clinical studies with fluconazole and amphotericin B, particularly in the treatment of oral Candida infection and Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis in AIDS patients are discussed.
