Susceptibility to nisin of bacterial strains isolated from mastitic milk

A modified agar diffusion method was used to test the sensitivity to different concentrations of nisin of 22 strains of Gram-negative bacteria (10 strains of Escherichia coli, 4 each of Serratia and Klebsiella, and 1 each of Salmonella, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas and Morganella morganii), and 17 strains of Gram-negative bacteria (7 of coagulase negative Staphylococcus, 2 of S. aureus, 1 of S. haemolyticus, 3 of Streptococcus bovis, 1 of S. uberis, 2 of Actinomyces pyogenes and 1 of Gemella morbillorum). All Gram-negative strains were resistant to nisin at all concentrations used, but all Gram-positive strains were either sensitive or very sensitive to the agent.
