Suspected gossypol toxicity in calves in two Israeli dairy herds

Suspected gossypol toxicity in calves in two Israeli dairy herds

Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine 51(2): 67-68

Cases of mortality among 2-4-weeks-old calves with clinical signs of appetite loss, emaciation, diarrhea and neurological irritation were observed in two large Israeli dairy herds. The calves were fed a milk replacer and were presented with a special total mixed ration (TMR) containing cotton seeds, which was offered to the calves until weaning. Bacteriological, virological and pathological examinations conducted post mortem have failed to incriminate any specific etiological agent. High levels of gossypol were found in the cotton seed and the TMR. Mortality cases stopped after the TMR was withdrawn.
