Suspected in utero infection in a Boran heifer experimentally infected with Trypanosoma vivax

Three Orma Boran and 3 Galana Boran cattle aged between 2.5 and 2.3 years were experimentally infected during the last trimester of pregnancy with T. vivax using Glossina morsitans flies. Three of the 6 infected dams' calves were premature and died within 24 h, births occurring 245, 254 and 258 after insemination and 54, 35 and 60 days after infection, respectively. No trypanosomes were detected in the calves. Two further heifers calved at term, 56 and 79 days after infection, and both calves died within 24 h, with no trypanosomes being detected. The last heifer calved 83 days after infection. The calf was weak and emaciated, weighing 10 kg, with a PCV of 25%. Trypanosomes appeared in blood 57 days after birth, with an estimated parasitaemia at 5 x 105/ml. The calf was treated i.m. with diminazene aceturate (Berenil) at 7 mg/kg. The parasitaemia disappeared within 3 weeks of treatment.
