Suspected rickettsial infection among a group of calves

Five calves aged 8-10 days developed a febrile illness, and 3 died. Bodies resembling Ehrlichia phagocytophila were present within erythrocytes in 14 of 24 blood smears from the calves or their dams. In 6 cases both calf and cow were positive.
