Suspected thiamine deficiency (Chastek's paralysis) in northern river otter (Lutra canadensis)

Suspected thiamine deficiency (Chastek's paralysis) in northern river otter (Lutra canadensis)

Scientifur 19(4): 297-304

Twelve northern river otters (3 per dietary group) were fed, respectively, diets that contained 0, 20, 40 or 60% (wet weight basis) carp (Cyprinus carpio). Supplementation with thiamin hydrochloride 50 mg/kg diet failed to prevent clinical signs suggestive of Chastek's paralysis. These signs included decreased feed intake, body weight loss, loss of coordination and paralysis accompanied by occasional convulsions.
