Suspension culture of cells of Lithospermum erythrorhizon - a producer of shikonin, one- and two-step cultivation

Suspension culture of cells of Lithospermum erythrorhizon - a producer of shikonin, one- and two-step cultivation

Russian Biotechnology ( 4): 32-37

The optimum conditions for suspension cell culture of the domestic strain VK-39 were determined experimentally. Maximum shikonin biosynthesis was obtained in a 1-step cultivation procedure on BPI medium under the following conditions: inoculation dose 8 g/litre (dried biomass), mass-transfer coefficient of oxygen about 20 h-1, duration of cycle 2 weeks. Under these conditions the shikonin yield reached 2 g/litre.
