Sustainability of farmer-managed groundwater irrigation systems in drought-prone areas: the role of socioeconomic conditions

Use of groundwater for irrigation in India has increased as a result of the expanding population, and because of the utilization of (i) newly constructed dug-cum-boreholes and tubewells, (ii) higher capacity pumps and (iii) new pumping arrangements on farmer sub-divided between inheriting family members. Continued exploitation of the groundwater at present rates is not sustainable, and the paper highlights the farmers problems in groundwater management.
