Sustainability of food production and food security in a freer world market economy

To safeguard food security, many developing countries have implemented policies to increase domestic food production in order to promote food self-sufficiency and reduce food imports. This paper discusses the rationale for food self-sufficiency policies for developing countries, particularly outlining the case of Indonesia, and comments on how the GATT agreement on agriculture will affect the situation.
