It is noted that the views on how to proceed with agricultural development vary hugely, and there are five distinct schools of thought (business-as-usual optimists, environmental pessimists, industrialized world to the rescue, new modernists, and sustainable intensification). Sustainable agriculture is defined, and described in more detail.
