Sustainable grazing in the subtropics

Sustainable grazing in the subtropics

Rural Research ( 172): 4-8

Management of Heteropogon contortus grasslands in N. Queensland is discussed. In a grazing trial at stocking rates of 0.15, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 steers/ha on 3 sites with or without direct sowing of 5 pasture legumes, addition of legumes increased liveweight gain by about 22 kg/steer in spite of poor legume establishment. Direct sowing of legumes tended to reduce the amount of H. contortus in the sward.
