Sustainable harvesting of timber from woodlands in Southern Africa: challenges for the future

Southern African Forestry Journal ( 178): 59-72

Some 56% of the southern African region (the SADC countries, including South Africa) is classified as unconverted forest and woodland, with 22% pasture. Some of this has been degraded by shifting cultivation, fire, overstocking with livestock or over-utilization of wood products. Only 6% had been converted to agriculture. Mean population density in the region is 17 people/kmsuperscript 2 and urbanization is increasing.
