Sustainable management of soil resources by avoiding tilling the soil

Sustainable management of soil resources by avoiding tilling the soil

Entwicklung + Landlicher Raum 31(4): 22-25

Tillage which exposes soils to wind and rains is a major cause of soil degradation. A sustainable management system requires permanent soil cover and direct planting. Direct planting is common in the USA and is gaining importance in Latin America. While it was initially a system for large mechanized farms it is increasingly being adopted by small farmers in marginal areas. The success of the system in Latin American is much due to the support of German development agencies.
