Sustainable silvi-horti-pastoral system for Meghalaya

A brief account is given of production by a system set up in 1987 on hill slopes of 30-60% in Meghalaya. The components were Alnus nepalensis planted at a spacing of 6x4 m on mini-contour bunds, with pineapple suckers planted in paired rows along the tree rows in the following year, and the inter-contour spaces sown (just before the monsoon) with Stylosanthes guianensis, Panicum maximum, Setaria sphacelata and Imperata cylindrica.
