Sustained use of highland forest stands for benzoin production from Styrax in north Sumatra, Indonesia

Purbatua, a village in the Tapanuli region in north Sumatra, where forest has been maintained for a long time without clear felling and still yields the indigenous product benzoin (incense, from the resin of Styrax paralleloneurum and S. benzoin; the resin is also used medicinally and for cosmetics) provides an example of rational land use. A wide range of sizes of benzoin trees is maintained under natural pine (Pinus merkusii) stands to ensure a sustained yield and harvest of benzoin.
