Sustaining irrigated agriculture in China

Sustaining irrigated agriculture in China

Sustainability of irrigated agriculture Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, Vimeiro, Portugal, 21-26 March, 1994: 581-587

Land and water resources in China are described. The development of irrigated agriculture in China is outlined. Irrigated agriculture in China has a total area of 49.7 million ha, but there are problems with water scarcity and low efficiency of the present irrigation systems. An increase in groundwater exploitation for irrigated agriculture has resulted in a drop in the groundwater table in parts of north and northwest China and some sea water intrusion in coastal regions.
