Sustaining masculine hegemony: rugby and the nostalgia of masculinity

In New Zealand and South Africa, nostalgic representations of past rugby successes and heroes have been closely linked with a nostalgia for a simpler past when everyone knew their place and real men played rugby. In both countries, the truest test of masculinity came when the two countries played each other in rugby and rapid social, political and economic changes have led many to focus longingly on the simpler days of the past.
