Sustaining tourism in Far North Queensland

Sustaining tourism in Far North Queensland

People and tourism in fragile environments: 51-68

Traditional views of tourism tend to assume that minority cultural groups are passive participants, dependent on outside decision-makers and frozen in a static traditional way of life. This paper challenges those assumptions and considers tourism as two-way cultural interactions on which economics are only one part of a much more complex exchange. The focus of the paper is on the exchange of ideas and values that accompanies the meeting of diverse cultural groups.
