The adaptations of an apterous grasshopper to drought in the north-east of Brazil

The adaptations of an apterous grasshopper to drought in the north-east of Brazil

Secheresse 7(2): 99-103

The distribution, biology and injuriousness of Stiphra robusta, an apterous acridoid of the arid north-east of Brazil, are reviewed and some data for 1977-84 are presented. The adults are totally wingless, and the grasshopper looks like a stick insect and is well adapted to an arid climate with a very irregular rainy season. Some years, swarming causes heavy damage to vegetation and certain crops in plant nurseries.
