The consequences of the drying out of the Aral Sea on the locust situation in the region

, : The consequences of the drying out of the Aral Sea on the locust situation in the region. Secheresse 7(2): 109-113

The delta of the Amudarya River situated to the south-east of the Aral Sea was one of the most important breeding centres for the acridid Locusta migratoria migratoria in the former USSR. The 2nd species of economic importance, Calliptamus italicus, was restricted to the irrigated zone. The drying of the delta after the excessive uptake of water from Amudarya for irrigation has led to radical changes in the environment and, consequently, in the locust situation. These changes are discussed.
