The conservation of Populus nigra L. and gene flow with cultivated poplars in Europe

, : The conservation of Populus nigra L. and gene flow with cultivated poplars in Europe. Forest Genetics 2(3): 135-144

Populus nigra can be considered on the verge of extinction in a large part of western Europe, as its natural habitat is being gradually reduced by human activity, and the gene pool is threatened by the large-scale presence of cultivated hybrids as well as the ornamental cultivar 'Lombardy poplar' (P. nigra var. italica), which spontaneously hybridize with P. nigra.
