The application of potentially toxic elements in sewage sludge to grassland is controlled in the EC by legislation. However, there remains doubt as to whether 3 weeks' no-grazing after sludge application is sufficient to reduce the risk of direct ingestion of sludge by ruminants. Studies were conducted at grassland sites in west Scotland into factors influencing herbage contamination by sludge adherence, and the effects of liming, ploughing and fertilizer-N rate on heavy metal uptake.
