The generation of acoustic emission (AE) signals in drying wood and changes in microscopic structure were studied in samples of tension wood and opposite wood of beech (Fagus sylvatica). The opposite wood generated a higher number of acoustic impulses than tension wood. Tension wood activity decreased with an increase in the fraction of gelatinous fibres in wood tissue.
