Two long-term experiments were conducted to study the influence of low and high dietary protein during gestation and lactation on reproduction of sows. Liveweight loss of lactating sows depended on energy and protein intake of the previous pregnancy. Sows ate more ME and CP during pregnancy and lost more body reserves during lactation. Liveweight loss of sows given high protein in lactation was less than for sows given lower protein.
